Alan Cole
BUS120 Class

Alan Cole has over 20 years of business operations experience at growth-stage technology companies and has spent the last five years in mentor and advisory roles for dozens of local startups.

Two years after receiving his Engineering degree from Santa Clara University, he founded his first company in San Diego where he focused on software development and first-generation Internet applications.  After managing the company for eight years, Alan returned to school to earn his MBA in Entrepreneurial Management from the University of Texas.  During his time in Austin, he worked for an early-stage venture firm where he supported deal screening and due diligence efforts.

Since returning to San Diego, Alan served as Senior Vice President of Active Network (IPO in 2011) and is currently the Chief Operating Officer of TakeLessons  - a venture-backed online education marketplace.

Alan is an avid runner and enjoys spending time with his wife and two children in North County San Diego.

IMPORTANT NOTE on CLOSED Classes: All the online classes and many of the on-campus classes close quickly. You should register ASAP if you are interested in any class. If you change your mind, please drop the class immediately so others can enroll. If the class is closed, consider the Wait List procedures; be aware of the rules and the limitations. Otherwise, consider these options: 1) register for another section if available; 2) register for another class; 3) consider registering in a future semester; 4) show up for the first day of an on-campus class and discuss with the instructor; or 5) forget about it and move on. The instructor will not intervene with the wait list procedure.

Please be aware that, once a class reaches maximum enrollment and “closes,” on or after the first day of the semester, even if “available” spaces appear on SURF due to drops, it is within the instructor's complete discretion on whether to add more students at that time. Drops after the first day are normal attrition and are factored in when setting the maximum enrollment. The class has started and important assignments and subject matter have already been covered. Please do not email the instructor. Thank you for your understanding.

Teaching Philosophy/Style and Class Management/Activities

My goal is to ensure that students are prepared to put their education to work in their chosen career path.  I focus on the application of our coursework within a business setting and teach concepts in the context of today's business environment.  I'm truly excited about the subject-matter and I'm committed to the success of our students.

Classes are engaging and interactive.  They will be filled with a myriad of delivery formats that speak to different learning styles.  As in the business world, articulate and on-point communication is critical to success and will be emphasized in every class.  The classroom setting will embrace an open and respectful dialog.  All students are expected to be prepared for class and ready to participate.

Personal growth is catalyzed when we reach outside of our comfort zone and embrace new concepts.  Our class will work together to ensure we're all learning at our potential.

I view it as an honor to teach our students and look forward to seeing you in class!
