Math 101 - Intermediate Algebra Instructor: Beth Powell
Section # 1473 Instructor email: bpowell@miracosta.edu

Orientation: You must complete the class orientation by March 28, 2011 at 11pm. This orientation can be found on my home page.

Prerequisite: The prerequisite for Math 101 is a grade of "C" or better in Math 830 or a qualifying score on the math competency exam (MCE).

Course Description: Topics include a sudy of radicals, exponents, rational expressions, concepts of relations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear and quadratic functions; and the solutions of equations from these topics.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): At the end of this course, you should be able to:

Textbook: Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, 3rd Ed. by K. Elayn Martin-Gay Note: This is an e-textbook delivered through the website http://www.coursecompass.com along with an online tutorial system, MyMathLab, which will be used to complete homework, quizzes, and tests. Students need to register with CourseCompass by midnight on March 28 and complete the orentation (which includes completion of the first homework assignment) or they will be dropped.

Calculators: Scientific calculators are required in this class. In case you own a graphing calculator, be aware that there will be tests in which you cannot use a graphing calculator. You may not use a calculator on a cell phone or ipod during a quiz or test. Calculators are available to check out for use in the Math Learning Center (MLC) if needed.

Course Evaluation and Grading: Your course grade will be determined by the following:

Assignments - Grading Scale - Points
Homework 6 @ 25pts each = 150pts A = 90% - 100% A = 720 - 800 pts
Quizzes 3 @ 50pts each = 150pts B = 80% - 89% B = 640 - 719.9 pts
Midterm 1 @ 200 points C = 70% - 79% C = 560 - 639.9 pts
Final Exam 1 @ 300 points D = 60% - 69% D = 480 - 559.9 pts

Note: The quizzes, midterm and final are proctored assessments which you must take in the Math Learning Center. Thus, you will need to come to campus 5 times (arrangements can be made to take a quiz on the same day as the midterm or final if you can only make it to campus 3 times) to complete this class successfully.

Extra Credit: Extra credit can be earned by mastering all the concepts in the Study Plan for each chapter. For each chapter successfully mastered, 3 points will be added to your final exam grade with a maximum of 15 total points added.

Workload:It is essential that you understand how much work is required for this course. This is an online class, not a self-paced class. There will be assignments due everyday (Mon - Friday) and you will be expected to keep up with the class calendar. There will be just as much work expected of you in this class as in any other Math 101 section. Since this class is taught in only 8 weeks, the expectation is that you will be spending approximately 27 hours per week studying, practicing, and doing math for this class. Falling behind in this fast-paced class section may result in you not being able to complete the course. Please think about your life at this point in time and decide whether or not you have the time to put into this class. I want you to set yourself up for success. If your life is too busy to add the workload of this class to it, you may decide that you should not take it now and take a full-length semester class later.

How to Procede through this class:

Good luck to you all in this class! I'm Really looking forward to helping you learn Algebra this semester!
