Math 101 Spring 2011 Online Orientation Page

If you are enrolled in the 8-week, Math 101 Class NBR: 1473, taught by Beth Powell (or are thinking about adding this class), you are in the right place!

  • If you are enrolled with admissions and records, please complete both parts of the mandatory orientation. Part I consists of following the four (4) steps below. Part II of your mandatory orientation is described below, but must be completed from within your required materials. Once you have completed both parts of the orientation, your orientation is complete and you can begin work in the class. Although the class officially begins on March 28, the course materials (CourseCompass) will be available for you to begin working anytime after March 11- please note, however, that I won't officially begin teaching the class until the 28th. This is just an opportunity for you to get familiar with the course materials if you would like.)

  • If you are considering enrolling in this class, please follow Part I Step 1 and Step 2 below. These two steps answer just about every question students have about the class. If, after reading Steps 1 & 2, you are interested in enrolling in this class, please sign up with admissions and records and then complete the remainder of the steps in Part I and Part II of the orientation.
After going through these steps carefully and thoroughly, if you have a question that has not been answered, please send your question to bpowell@miracosta.edu.

Orientation Part I Step 1 - Read the Syllabus Thoroughly:

Math 101 Online Syllabus Spring 2011

Orientation Part I Step 2 - Read and Watch Information About Your Required Materials for Your Class:

A. Watch the following video:

How to Enter Answers - this gives you an overview as to how to input your homework and quiz answers into MyMathLab to have them graded correctly.

B. Go to: www.coursecompass.com

Read the information in the links titled "Getting Started", "FAQ's", and "Support".

Please note that a PC running a recent Windows operating system (2000, XP, or newer) will be needed to access your required material. Using a mac is possible, but may require additional software such as "parallels". All the computers in the Math Learning Center at MiraCosta College are configured to run MyMathLab/CourseCompass. It is NOT required that you have your own computer at home for this class, you may use the computers in the MLC for your entire class. Therefore, having a problem with your computer is not a valid excuse for missing assignments during the semester.

C. If you were previously enrolled in CourseCompass, you may not need to pay for this course again. Log into CourseCompass as usual and click on the "Enroll in a new course" button. Enter the course ID for this course (given below) and follow the instructions on the screen. If you have used this book in a previous class, CourseCompass will not charge you again for access.

Orientation Part I Step 3 - Purchase and Access Your Required Materials (MyMathLab) and College Algebra Textbook

Your required online material is: MyMathLab

Registration into MyMathLab/CourseCompass will be needed in order to complete your mandatory orientation. Failure to purchase and register in this required material will result in being dropped from the class.

You will need to following information to register in MyMathLab:

  • Course ID Code. The Course ID Codes are created by MML and are NOT the same as section numbers. The Course ID for the online section is: " powell34537"
  • School's Zip code: 92056
  • A valid email address that you check on a regular basis
  • An Access code

You can purchase access either from the bookstore or online from the publisher when you create an account with CourseCompass.

Orientation Part II - Access Your Required Materials (MyMathLab) and Complete the Steps in the 'Orientation' Link

Once you have purchased and redeemed access to your required materials, log in to them (http://www.coursecompass.com/) and click on the link to your class materials. The class materials link will look something like " Math 101 Online #1472 (3/28 - 5/21). Once in your class materials, please do the following two (2) steps:

A. Click on each link in the class menu (on the left).
You need to be very familiar with where everything in the class is located
(Homework, Quizzes, Discussion Board, eBook, Practice Problems, Lecture Videos, Study Plan, etc.).

Once you have poked around enough and are familiar with where everything go to the "Discussion Board" and post an introduction from you to everyone in the class. Be sure to create a new thread (don't just reply to someone else's post) and put your name in the subject line. In the body of the post, please tell us a little about yourself (for example, your major, reason for taking this, particular online class, your math background, and anything of interest that you'd like to share with the class).

B. Click on the "Quizzes and Tests" link . You will need to complete the Prerequisite quiz with a score of 50% or better to move ahead in this class. The prerequisite quiz is a quiz that covers factoring. You can take the quiz multiple times, but you need to at the very least be able to do half of the problems correctly. If you take the quiz and decide that you need to review the material on factoring, you can find that material in the ebook in chapter 6.

Once you have completed all of the activities described above (both Part I and Part II), you have completed your mandatory orientation. You now need to begin work in the class. To do that, click on the "Homework" link and open up the first homework assignment entitled "Read 7.1"

(Once you have completed both parts of your mandatory orientation, you will probably not need to refer back to this page as most of this information is in your syllabus or in the announcements in MyMathLab.)
