a. Objectives
This lesson provides an online orientation to this course, covers 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 from your text, and concludes with Quiz 1. When you complete the online orientation you should be able to answer questions about:
1. Testing dates, locations and procedures for the class.
2. How to use MyMathLab to access the etext, videos, practice problems, step-by-step solutions to problems, homework, quizzes and online reviews.
3. Class policies: grading, attendance, academic honesty, etc.
4. How to use the Lessons to work your way through the class.
When you complete the textbook portion of this lesson you should be able to solve each of the following types of problems, showing all relevant steps:
1.1.1. Solve linear equations.
1.1.2. Solve equations that lead to linear equations.
1.1.3. Solve applied problems that involve linear equations.
1.2.1. Solve a quadratic equation by factoring.
1.2.2. Solve a quadratic equation by using the quadratic formula.
1.2.3. Find the discriminant of a quadratic equation, and use the discriminant to determine whether the quadratic equation has two unequal real solutions, a repeated real solution, or no real solution, without solving the quadratic equation.
1.3.1 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide complex numbers.
1.3.2. Solve quadratic equations in the complex number system.
b. Assignments and Due Dates
All assignments for Lesson 1 must be completed and submitted by 11:59pm on Sunday, January 25, 2009. Assignments for this lesson include:
Online Orientation:
1. Click on "Announcements" in the MML menu. Read thoroughly the Welcome and Orientation Announcement on the MML home page.
2. Click on "Syllabus" in the MML menu and print out and read the syllabus.
3. Click on "Quick Reference" in the MML menu and read and print out the Quick Reference Sheet.
4. Read the testing information in the Welcome and Orientation Announcement, the syllabus, and the Quick Reference Sheet. Note the testing "windows" for the required on-campus tests, and the testing policy. If you have any questions about the testing policy, email me.
5. In the syllabus, read the calculator policy. Email me if you have any questions.
6. In the syllabus, read the grading policy. Email me if you have any questions.
7. Click on "Lessons" in the MML menu. You will see a page with twelve lessons on it. Click on Lesson 1 to see the material that is due by Sunday, August 31.
8. Click on "E-text, Videos, Practice" in the MML menu. Explore the electronic text, practice problems and videos located here. These resources are available to help you learn the course material.
9. Click on "Lectures". Open the lecture notes for section 1.1. The lecture notes contain examples (a few are worked out, many are left blank for you to work out) and keys at the end of the notes for each section.
10. Click on "Homework" in the MML menu. Here you will find the links to all homework assignments. Email me if you have any difficulty finding these.
11. Click on "Quizzes/Test Rev." in the MML menu. Here you will find the Quizzes and all of the online test reviews. Email me if you have any difficulty in finding these.
12. Click on "Chapter Reviews". Here you will find a review sheet for each chapter. These are optional reviews and do not count for points. However, I highly recommend that before each test, you print out the appropriate reviews, and work through them solving each problem and showing all steps. This will help you prepare for the paper-and-pencil tests.
13. Click on "Test Keys" in the MML menu. A log in page for the Library Reserves will pop up. Use your SURF ID and password to log in. You will then be taken to the Math 125 Test Keys page. Approximately one week after the close of each testing window, the keys to each version of the test will be posted here for your reference. Also posted here you will find keys to tests that were given last semester. Use these keys as practice before you take each test.
14. Click on "Communication" in the MML menu. Find the buttons for the Discussion Forums and email capabilities. On the Discussion Board, please introduce yourself as you would in an in-person class. Email me if you have any questions about the discussion board or the email tool.
