Deadline: Sunday, March 1, 2009

Remember to check announcements and messages in MyMathLab daily.

a. Objectives

This lesson covers 3.4 and 3.5 in your textbook and Quiz 5. When you complete this lesson you should be able to solve each of the following types of problems, showing all relevant steps:
3.4.1. Graph any function from the Library of Functions (constant function, identity function, square function, cube function, square root function, cube root function, reciprocal function, and absolute value function). Label three points on the graph, and sketch the graph using the proper shape.
3.4.2. Graph piecewise-defined functions.
3.5.1. Graph functions using vertical or horizontal shifts of basic functions from the Library of Functions. Describe the horizontal or vertical shift(s).
3.5.2. Graph functions using compressions or stretches of basic functions from the Library of Functions. Describe the compression or stretch.
3.5.3. Graph functions using reflections of basic functions from the Library of Functions. Describe the reflection.
3.5.4. Graph functions using combinations of shifts, compressions and stretches, and reflections of basic functions from the Library of Functions. Describe the transformation(s).

b. Assignments and Due Dates

All assignments for Lesson 5 must be completed and submitted by 11:59pm on Sunday, March 1, 2009. Assignments for this lesson include:

1. Learn the material in 3.4 by using "E-text, Videos, Practice" (study the text, view videos, do example problems and practice problems) AND/OR using the "Lecture Notes" (read the lecture notes, work out the examples, and check your answers using the key). Both are accessed through the MyMathLab (MML) menu on the left of this page.

2. Complete the homework assignment for 3.4. Homework assignments are accessed through "Homework" on MML menu on the left.

3. Learn the material in 3.5 by using"E-text, Videos, Practice" (study the text, view videos, do example problems and practice problems) AND/OR using the "Lecture Notes" (read the lecture notes, work out the examples, and check your answers using the key). Both are accessed through the MML menu on the left of this page.

4. Complete the homework assignment for 3.5. Homework assignments are accessed through "Homework" on the MML menu on the left.
