math graphicsLesson 9: Sections 5.2 and 5.3, Quiz 9, and Test 3 Review

Deadline: Sunday, April 12, 2009 (Note: Test 3 Review is not due until Wednesday, 4/15).

Remember to check announcements and your messages in MyMathLab daily.

Please note that the testing window for Test 3 begins on Monday, April 13 and ends on Thursday, April 16.

a. Objectives

This lesson covers 5.2 and 5.3 in your textbook, Quiz 9, and Test 3 Review. When you complete this lesson you should be able to solve each of the following types of problems, showing all relevant steps:
5.2.1. Find the domain of a rational function.
5.2.2. Find the vertical asymptotes of a rational function.
5.2.3. Find horizontal or oblique asymptotes of a rational function.
5.3.1. Graph a rational function using the seven-step method shown in the textbook. Show all steps. Label all vertical, horizontal and oblique asymptotes. Label at least two points on the graph.
Test 2 Review (5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.5, and 5.6): Review all sections, using the objectives given in Lessons 7, 8, and 9.

b. Assignments and Due Dates

All assignments for Lesson 9 must be completed and submitted by 11:59pm on Sunday, March 12, 2009.. Assignments for this lesson include:

1. Learn the material in 5.2 by using "E-text, Videos, Practice" (study the text, view videos, do example problems and practice problems) AND/OR using the "Lecture Notes" (read the lecture notes, work out the examples, and check your answers using the key). Both are accessed through the MyMathLab (MML) menu on the left of this page.

2. Complete the homework assignment for 5.2. Homework assignments are accessed through "Homework" on MML menu on the left.

3. Learn the material in 5.3 by using "E-text, Videos, Practice" (study the text, view videos, do example problems and practice problems) AND/OR using the "Lecture Notes" (read the lecture notes, work out the examples, and check your answers using the key). Both are accessed through the MyMathLab (MML) menu on the left of this page.

4. Complete the homework assignment for 5.3. Homework assignments are accessed through "Homework" on MML menu on the left.

5. Complete and submit Quiz 9. Quizzes are accessed through "Quizzes/Test Rev" on the MML menu on the left.

6. Complete and submit Test 3 Review (due Wednesday, April 15). Test Reviews are accessed through "Quizzes/Test Rev" in the MML menu on the left.

7. Optional, but highly recommended: (Note: Since this is an optional activity, there is no rush to complete it by the due date for this Lesson. I recommend that you work on it during the testing window, planning to complete it before you take the test.) In addition to the Test 3 Review in MML, you will find a Optional 8.1 and Chapter 5 Review posted under "Optional Chap. Revs." in the MML menu on the left of this page. Also, you will find a key to a version of Test 3 that was given last semester posted under "Test Keys" in the MML menu on the left side of this page. I highly recommend that you download, print out and work through this review and old test. Graphing is an important aspect of Test 3, and the Optional Chapter Review and old test will give you valuable practice in graphing that is similar to what you will see on the test. Complete the optional review and old test under testing conditions; that is, with closed book, showing all steps and in a two-hour time frame. Use the key to grade your work, and then go back and redo any problems that you missed. Remember that studying under conditions similar to testing conditions (closed book, showing all work and time restrictions) helps you to perform better on the test.

c. Test 3 Information

Test 3 will be given at the Academic Proctoring Center (APC) at both the Oceanside and San Elijo campuses. You must make an appointment to take your test. Call the APC at 760.757.2121 extension 6471 (Oceanside), 760.944.4449 extension 7752, or schedule an appointment online.
There is a grace period for the test that extends from Friday, April 17 through Tuesday, April 21. You must contact me and get approval to take the test during the grace period. This semester, each student may request approval to take ONE test during the grace period for that test. Tests taken during the grace period will earn a maximum score of 70%. Students who have not taken the test by the end of the grace period will earn a zero on the test and may be dropped from the class.
