Office Hours: Monday 6pm-7pm, Wednesday 3pm-4pm and by arrangement.

The goal of the Music Program is to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge through creating educational opportunities for the student.  This course is an exploration of the physics of sound, sound recording, and sound reproduction.

Topics:  The video and audio recording chains, basic COMPOSITIONAL techniques, visual and audio aesthetics, software and hardware organization and operation will be studied. Basic music skills and theory will be explored.

Materials needed:  Several MAC FORMATTED, high density floppy disks are required and several ZIP DISKS are suggested.  A home computer is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

Grading:  Grades will be based on attendance, participation, and a demonstrated knowledge of the software as shown through test results and in class preparations.  Tests will be open for a period of two weeks only.

Textbook:.  "Protools 5.1" available in the bookstore.

Attendance  By enrolling in the class, you are making a commitment to attend regularly.
Limited number of absences is three.  Final grade will be seriously affected by arriving late or leaving early without prior instructor consent.  In class discussion is vital to understand studioprocedures and operation.  To avoid a poor grade it is your responsibility to drop before the prescribed drop dates. Do not expect to be dropped by the instructor.

Proficiency examinations must be taken before the end of the semester.
Results will be incorporated into final grade for class.

Student Objectives
Students will be evaluated through the performance and completion of assigned projects. Access to the studios will depend on the assignment of specified projects.
Following are the projects that must be completed as per the indicated Closing Dates.

Assignment A: Definitions-Applications
 Part One:  Present a two page glossary of definitions based on class lecture.
 Part Two: Assemble two short (under 30 second) video/audio clips containing a “model” work of video/audio that you can discuss with the class.
Area of focus: Nomenclature and Application
Closing Date:  Third week of class

Assignment B: Equipment / Hardware-Software
 Present a two page list of “widely-accepted” hardware and software in Audio-Video Industry
Area of focus:  “The Tools”
Closing Date:  Fifth week of class

Tests -Definitions and Equipment Applications  (Two separate tests)
Closing Date Week Five.

Assignment C:  “Spotting“
“Interpretation” - How are visual images interpreted?.  How do visual messages transform into audio messages?  “Spotting the film”
-Create Spot lists for four “provided” videos.
Area of focus:  “Spot List-The Script”
Closing Date:  Week Eight

Assignment D:  “The Project”
Closing Date:  Project Outline and Cue List due Week Eleven
Test-”Audio Synchronization”

Fourth Assignment:  “The Project”
Closing Date: Week Sixteen
