Music 185 and 186 students will cover the same “basic set” of assignments and testing.  The difference between the courses are in the skills sets associated with each section. Individually, Music 186 students will work on several concerts throughout the semester but still expected to attend all classes.  See assignment and syllabus addendum online.

Topics:  The physics of sound, amplification and sound reinforcement, the signal processing chain, fundamentals of MIDI, stage setup, and principles of touring and concert organization and operation will be studied. Elementary music skills and theory will also be explored.

Materials needed:  A toolkit will be assembled so be prepared to purchase some tools and a toolbox.  Approximate cost will be $35.00.

Grading:  Grades will be based on attendance, participation, and a demonstrated knowledge of the sound chain as shown through test results and in class preparations.  Tests will be open for a period of two weeks only.  Extra Credit Assignments will be given periodically throughout the semester.

Attendance:  By enrolling in the class, you are making a commitment to attend regularly.
Limited number of absences is three.  Final grade will be seriously affected by arriving late or leaving early without prior instructor consent.  In class discussion is vital to understand studio procedures and operation.  To avoid a poor grade it is your responsibility to drop before the deadline. Do not expect to be dropped by the instructor.

Proficiency examinations must be taken before the end of the semester. Results will be incorporated into final grade for class.
