Christina de Vaca
BUS290 Class

As a bilingual business executive, Christina de Vaca has over 15 years experience working directly with executives in the United States and Latin America to develop and further enhance their communication skills in both English and Spanish.  Her communications coaching also focuses on enabling a better understanding of cultural dynamics that generally impact business interactions.  Additionally, she has often served in the role of translator and interpreter for C-level executives individually and at international conferences. Christina currently serves as the Director of the Master of Science in Executive Leadership (MSEL) program at the University of San Diego.

Concurrently, her broad range of experiences in the governance setting has afforded her unique opportunities to participate in the expanding scope of directors’ responsibilities relating to board practices.  Ms. de Vaca served as Chief Governance Officer and Corporate Secretary for Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, a global specialty pharmaceutical company in Aliso Viejo, California.  She was instrumental in defining the new role of a governance executive at a time when burgeoning changes in corporate governance driven by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, New York Stock Exchange listing standards, institutional shareholders and rating agencies began to impact boardrooms on a national scale.

Before Valeant Pharmaceuticals, Christina served as Operations Vice President at Premier, Inc., a privately-held group purchasing organization, in San Diego. While at Premier she identified entrepreneurial opportunities and brokered innovative and highly successful partnerships for the benefit of shareowners.

Prior to Premier, Ms. de Vaca served as the Corporate Secretary at American Medical International, a $2.5 billion publicly-traded hospital organization in Dallas, Texas.  In that role, she was highly effective in managing complex relationships with international healthcare entities and other constituencies.

Ms. de Vaca is Six Sigma black-belt trained and is a professionally qualified instructor for the Forum of Corporate Directors Education Program at the University of California, Irvine.  She teaches governance at the University of San Diego and is currently engaged in a variety of efforts to improve governance practices on a broad scale.  She served on the Governance Practices Committee as well as the Small and Mid-Cap Companies Task Force of the Society of Corporate Secretaries and Governance Professionals based in New York City.  She chairs the Programs Committee for the Corporate Directors Forum in San Diego, where she is also a member of the Executive Committee and serves on the Board of Directors.

In addition to her role as Secretary to the Board, Ms. de Vaca chairs the Governance Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Ronald McDonald House Charities-San Diego.  She previously served on the Education Committee of the Forum for Corporate Directors in Orange County and as a director of the Just in Time for Foster Youth Board of Directors in San Diego.

Ms. de Vaca has a Bachelor of Business Studies degree from Dallas Baptist University and an MBA from the University of California, Irvine.

BUS 290 Business Communication Chapters for first two weeks of semester (PDFs):

BCOM-6: CH01 CH02

IMPORTANT NOTE on CLOSED Classes: All the online classes and many of the on-campus classes close quickly. You should register ASAP if you are interested in any class. If you change your mind, please drop the class immediately so others can enroll. If the class is closed, consider the Wait List procedures; be aware of the rules and the limitations. Otherwise, consider these options: 1) register for another section if available; 2) register for another class; 3) consider registering in a future semester; 4) show up for the first day of an on-campus class and discuss with the instructor; or 5) forget about it and move on. The instructor will not intervene with the wait list procedure.

Please be aware that, once a class reaches maximum enrollment and “closes,” on or after the first day of the semester, even if “available” spaces appear on SURF due to drops, it is within the instructor's complete discretion on whether to add more students at that time. Drops after the first day are normal attrition and are factored in when setting the maximum enrollment. The class has started and important assignments and subject matter have already been covered. Please do not email the instructor. Thank you for your understanding.

Teaching Philosophy/Style and Class Management/Activities

My classroom focus is on delivering the information you need in a way that will be useful in your career path and/or in your personal development.   I believe that learnings are truly valuable when we can apply them to improve our daily lives.  My goal is that each class will give you a “take-away” that can be used immediately. Through interactive discussions of real-world situations, we will apply the course materials to your individual needs.

So that class discussions can be truly meaningful, it will be important that you:

You will be most successful in this class if you:

All students should feel free to contact me either by phone or email if there are related topics that require clarification.  It is also important that students contact me immediately if there is a special situation (i.e., family or work, etc.) that calls for flexibility.   It is critical that arrangements for unique circumstances be made prior to any classroom assignment due dates.

Students will be able to access the syllabus, activities calendar and homework assignments on Blackboard as well as view all grades.  Please use Blackboard consistently inasmuch as bios of guest speakers and any special announcements or modifications to the schedule will be posted promptly.

I look forward to seeing you in my class.
