ACCT 101 – Practical Accounting On-line Class

This class is an introduction to financial accounting and covers an overview of accounting terminology, important uses of accounting data and how to properly complete the accounting cycle, prepare and analyze financial statements. Since this class if fully on-line it requires that you are self-disciplined and motivated to stay on course. This course is not self-paced. There are assignments due each week. This class requires regular access to a reliable internet connection, a functioning computer, good time management skills and dedication to follow the calendar diligently to ensure you are submitting all required work timely.

This section of Practical Accounting will be using the textbook College Accounting, 13th Edition by Jeffrey Slater (ISBN 9781269462235) and the on-line accounting software called My Accounting Lab which is bundled with the text. Blackboard will be used for important announcement, additional content and the Discussion Board.

The typical week will involve reviewing Power Points and/or videos, completing homework assignments in My Accounting Lab, taking quizzes and exams and participating in the Discussion Board on Blackboard. Your on-line experience can be greatly enhanced by being an active participant with your fellow classmates, just as you would in a real classroom. Success in this class will be easy to attain if you are organized and stay on-schedule with the weekly assignments. If you don’t think you are able to stay focused and motivated to complete the assignments every week without the active interaction of a classroom, then the on-line environment might not be for you. However, the on-line environment for the right student has many benefits - just think of all that time and money you won’t spend driving to campus and looking for a parking spot – that leaves more time for getting your accounting homework done in the peace of your own home! I won’t even be offended if you are texting while working on your homework. I won’t be offended by e-mail questions in the middle of the night. I may not answer them until the morning, but you can contact me anytime. I will be available on campus on Tuesdays for office hours from 9:30-10:30am if you do want to meet in person. On-line learning is a great tool, so please be sure you have the right mind-set about being successful from the start.  I look forward to being your virtual mentor to help you learn and acquire skills that can help you for a lifetime.
