Course description: This course consists of chronological
survey of World History from 1500 to the present. The material in the course
comes not only from a required text that focuses on major global trends and
thematic issues, but also utilizes primary political and literary sources from
each geographical area. It is my hope that these sources with provide academic
and personal stimulation by giving you greater insight into the socio-cultural
aspects of a specific region.
Texts
1. Traditions and Encounters Vol.II 3rd
Edition Bentley and Ziegler (be sure to buy a book that includes the
CD-ROM if you buy a used book)
Grading:
Fifty percent of
your grade is derived from your performance on weekly multiple choice quizzes.
For each unit you will read the text and take online quizzes on Blackboard. The
quizzes are posted on Monday, and close on Saturday at 11:00 p.m., at which
point they will be made unavailable to you.
Fifty percent of
your grade is based on a thesis generated using the Primary Source CD-ROM, and
on-line discussions (half of each discussion grade is based on your thesis, and
half is based on your subsequent discussion).
Included in this
portion of your grade will be one cooperative learning activity, where you will
create a power point presentation with group members on a specific unit, and
present it to the class for further discussion.
Requirements:
1. You must have
a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, and your computer must be able to
support the Blackboard program. Please see the SURF website and/or Student Helpdesk
for questions.
2. You must be
able to meet weekly deadlines, as the quizzes and thesis discussions are only
available for the time period for which they are assigned. If you miss them,
you fail that assignment.
3. You must have
a working knowledge of the Internet, and have experience creating multimedia Power Point Presentations or
videos that can be posted on the web.
4. You must be
willing and able to work cooperatively and respectfully (virtually or in
person) with other students of varied ethnic, religious and socio-economic
backgrounds in the development of a group project and in discussion activities.
Instructor availability:
I will be
available to respond to email during the
course Monday through Friday at ddorsey@miracosta.edu. I will return your email
within 24 hours. I am not in "my office" before the school year
starts or on the weekends.
