How to Estimate Your Final Course Grade

The Total Scores value is based on the correct weighting of scores described in your syllabus. It is impossible to predict your final grade if you do not know how to weight your scores. To estimate your final course grade, and to determine the score you will need on the Final Exam in order to get the letter grade you desire, use the information provided below.

Final Grade Break Off Percentages: Your final course grade will be based on the break off scores shown to the right, or shown in your syllabus1

A

900

B 800 C 700 D 600 F <600

Based on the Letter Grade break-off values listed above (or the values listed in your syllabus, if different), subtract your Total Scores value from the appropriate number above.  For example, if your Total Scores value is 730 points, and you want an "A" grade, you will need at least 170 points on the Final Exam.  Divide this value by two (e.g., 170/2; the "2" is based on 200 points for the final2) to produce an 85% score.  You will need at least an 85% score on your Final Exam to get an "A" grade.  If you averaged over 85% on your regular exams, you may receive this score on your Final Exam. However, based on past experience, most students will not get the average of their regular exams on the Final Exam.  It is more likely that you will get anywhere from a 7-10% lower score on the Final Exam than you averaged on the regular exams, due to retaining less information from earlier exams than later ones. Therefore, you will likely score less that the 85% needed to get an "A" grade. You will need to study extra hard just to get your average score for the Final Exam. Good luck!

1For example, the point scale to the right is based on an "A" grade requiring 900 points, and a "C" grade requiring 700 points, etc. Different courses may have different break off points, so check your syllabus.

2If your Final Exam is worth a different value (compared to the 20% described above), use that value to divide by (e.g,, for a Final Exam worth 250 points, divide by 2.5; for a Final Exam worth 150 points, divide by 1.5).  This will equal the percentage score you need on the Final Exam.  If the percentage is lower than your average percent on the regular exams, you should easily attain is score.  However, if the percentage score you determine is higher than the average you received on the regular exams, you likely will not get that score, and may get a grade lower than you want.
