Thank you for your interest, but no more crashers will be taken at this time.

Drops have been completed and there are seats available in the class. If you wish to crash the class (i.e. get a permission number) and take one of those seats, please send me an email ( japalatea@miracosta.edu ) and give me the following information:

  1. Your Name (as you are registered with the school).
  2. Student ID Number (i.e. Surf ID number)
  3. Class number
  4. Confirmation that you have read and understood this whole page (the Class Welcome page)
  5. Confirmation that you have read and understood the Class Orientation and acknowledgement that you will take the time to complete all of the steps in the entire online orientation by 11:59 pm Wednesday.
  6. Confirmation that you'll take the time to be ready for Quiz 1 no later than Thursday.

Crash requests not conforming to these directions will be ignored.

Online Prealgebra Math 820 Summer 2009 Introduction Page

If you are enrolled in Section 1240 (or are looking to add Section 1240) you are in the right place!

Welcome! My name is Mrs. Apalatea and I will be your instructor for the 6-week summer session (June 15 - July 22).

Some students may find the idea of taking this class to be somewhat intimidating. Maybe this will be your first online math class or your first math class in several years. Maybe math is not your easiest subject or you're concerned about the semester only being 6 weeks. Regardless of your past experience, I believe completing this class is absolutely attainable for any student who has the time, devotion and persistence to dedicate to the class for the entirety of the intense 6-week time period - unless, of course, your learning style is inconsistent with the class format.

Will this class move VERY fast? Yes. You will be spending 5-6 hours per day, 6 days per week just to get through this class.
But that means it will be over quickly!

Will I be overwhelmed? Maybe. Definitely, if you get behind!

Will I be proud of myself when the class ends? You Betcha!!!

Here are a few very important things about the class that each of you should know BEFORE you commit taking this class.

1. On-Campus Testing Requirements

As noted in the schedule of classes (both the printed version and the online version), you are required to come to campus to take one Midterm and one Final Exam. These paper-and-pencil exams will be taken at MiraCosta College's Academic Proctoring Center (APC). You will have several choices as to the day and time you choose to come in and take these assessments. You can always take a Midterm/Final early (Finishing this class in less than 6 weeks is GREAT!). You just can NOT take a Midterm/Final later than its due date.

  • The Midterm must be taken no later than Tues July 7
  • The Final must me taken no later than Wed July 22

Note: If you are deployed in the military and have a Testing Officer (or a similar set up) willing to proctor your exams, please email me at least one week before class begins with that request. I will need time to contact and get information from your Testing Officer before the first day of class before I can agree to that proctoring arrangement.

2. Mandatory Orientation

As noted in the schedule of classes (both the printed version and the online version), there is a mandatory online orientation for all students enrolled in this class. You must complete the entire orientation no later than 11:59 pm on Monday June 15th. Students not completing the entire orientation by this deadline will be dropped from the class for non-attendance.

As soon as you add the class, please begin your mandatory class orientation by clicking on the arrow at the bottom of this page. Please note that part of your mandatory orientation requires you to complete some work in your required online materials (MyMathLab/Course Compass). Thus, you will not be able to complete the orientation without purchasing your required online materials.

Please feel free to go part-way through the orientation even if you are not currently enrolled in the class. Just DO NOT purchase the course materials unless you are actually enrolled in the class. You can complete Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, and a portion of Step 4 without purchasing the required online materials.

3. Crashing / Adding Once the Semester has Begun

If the class fills but you still want to be in it, please carefully follow the steps below:

  • Check Surf (online enrolled) regularly. People add and drop classes frequently in the weeks, days and hours leading up to the first day of class. If a spot opens up, take it! Once you are in the class, do the entire mandatory orientation.
  • While you are waiting to (hopefully) get a spot in the class, you can complete the steps in the mandatory orientation up until the actual purchase of the online materials.
  • By 2 pm on the second day of classes (June 16), I will be dropping enrolled students who have not completed their mandatory orientation. **At that point, I will post a note AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE** letting everyone know that drops are completed and how many (if any) spaces there are available in the class.
  • IF there are any spots in the class at that point, then I will give directions on how to contact me and request permission to add (I'll give more details on what information I need from you if there are spots available at that point). Crash requests coming in prior to my posting that day, or those requests not conforming to the instructions I post, will be ignored.

Students adding on second day or third day of class (June 16 or 17) have 24 hours to complete the entire mandatory orientation.

No students will be added after the third day of class (June 17) as your first graded Quiz is due no later than the fourth day of class.

4. A Note About Required Online Materials:

Your required online materials are called MyMathLab or called Course Compass - either name is fine.

Registration into MyMathLab will be needed in order to complete your mandatory orientation. Failure to purchase and register in this required material will result in being dropped from the class.

Please note that a PC computer running a recent Windows operating system (2000, XP, or newer) and non-dial up internet access will be needed to access MyMathLab/Course Compass. All the computers in the Math Learning Center at MiraCosta College are already configured properly. It is NOT required that you have your own computer at home for this class; you may use the computers in the MLC for your entire class. The MLC opens for the summer on Monday June 1st (they can help you with your math if you get stuck, too) If you have technical difficulties on the computer you planned to use for this class and you are not able to resolve immediately during the semester, you may need to use the campus computers to continue taking this class.
More information about MyMathLab, as well as much more information about the class (including the assessment schedule), can be found in the mandatory orientation.
