Linda earned her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Nova-Southeastern University and her Master of Science degree in instructional technology from National University. 

She has over 20 years of administrative experience working with senior management of corporations such as Mattel Toys, Motorola, Barnett Bank, and IDEC Pharmaceuticals.  She has taught business subjects and computer applications to adult students since 1988.

IMPORTANT NOTE on CLOSED Classes: All the online classes and many of the on-campus classes close quickly. You should register ASAP if you are interested in any class. If you change your mind, please drop the class immediately so others can enroll. If the class is closed, consider the Wait List procedures; be aware of the rules and the limitations. Otherwise, consider these options: 1) register for another section if available; 2) register for another class; 3) consider registering in a future semester; 4) show up for the first day of an on-campus class and discuss with the instructor; or 5) forget about it and move on. The instructor will not intervene with the wait list procedure.

Please be aware that, once a class reaches maximum enrollment and “closes,” on or after the first day of the semester, even if “available” spaces appear on SURF due to drops, it is within the instructor's complete discretion on whether to add more students at that time. Drops after the first day are normal attrition and are factored in when setting the maximum enrollment. The class has started and important assignments and subject matter have already been covered. Please do not email the instructor. Thank you for your understanding.

Teaching Philosophy/Style and Class Management/Activities

There are many types of writing:  academic writing, technical writing, autobiographical texts, media articles, essays, fiction, science fiction, editorials, etc.  In business writing, you will no longer ask “how many words should I write?”  You will use as many words as you need to get your point across accurately and politely.

I believe we all learn from pain.  Put your hand on a hot stove, and the pain will be a reminder not to do that again.  Earn a few very low grades, and you will learn to stop writing for an academic audience and begin writing for a business audience.

My goal in business communication is for learning to take place.  We build on what we learned the day before, and we practice and rehearse our new writing skills.  I collect writing assignments daily, and my grading is harsh but fair.  You may be at a disadvantage if you are unable to type 45 words per minute accurately using all fingers properly positioned and if you are not proficient in MS Word.  If that is the case, you must allow extra time for your assignments.

We will be writing a variety of business letters, memos, and emails.  Students will hone their grammar skills, identify their weaknesses, and develop strategies to overcome them.  We will create PowerPoint presentations and learn a variety of computer tips and tricks to format documents professionally.  There will be quizzes, written reports, and proofreading exercises.  You will create a great resumé and cover letter and learn about the job search process.

It took me a long time to earn a degree.  I know real life can be difficult.  However, the sacrifices I had to make were worth it.  Having a certificate or an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree can open up a new level of opportunity for you and your family.  It is my job to ensure that you do have the skills that I say you have when I give you your final grade.  I work hard, and I expect you to work hard.

However, in any one semester, there will be things that happen.  Some may be happy occasions, some may be tragedies.  It is for this reason that every student must maintain excellent class attendance.  Should something important come up, a student who has been in class every day may feel reasonably comfortable attending to that personal matter.  When real life gets overwhelming, I am always willing to work with students who have attended class regularly and handed in work in a timely manner.

With your enthusiastic participation, BUS 290 can be a fun and high-energy class.  Work hard, stretch your limits, laugh at yourself, learn from your mistakes, and excel!
