MIRACOSTA COLLEGE
ACCT 148 Computer Accounting
Instructor Pat Hartley
(See Syllabus linked on Instructor’s
home page)
In this course students learn to apply fundamental accounting concepts and principles and analyze business events with the use of a computer accounting program for commercial business enterprise. The software we currently utilize is QuickBooks Accountant 2014 for Windows only.
QuickBooks enjoys widespread use among small businesses as a financial accounting package because of the program’s popularity, manageability, and flexibility. Students enter accounting transactions, make adjustments and corrections, create and analyze financial reports, produce and compare financial statements, create a company file from scratch, calculate payroll, use advanced features for loan and asset tracking and make end of year adjustments on a Windows based system.
This section is conducted fully online. The online environment is a tremendous way to learn, but it is not for everyone:
· This class is NOT self-paced. A typical week will involve reviewing PowerPoint Presentations, reading and completing textbook and other homework assignments, taking quizzes, doing a midterm and a final project, and participating in a blog on Blackboard.
· Accounting background and experience is highly recommended as this class focuses on applying those skills in a computer environment.
· You must have good time management skills and dedication to follow the calendar diligently to ensure you are submitting all required work on time as scheduled.
· You must be motivated, organized, self-disciplined and stay focused in order to complete the weekly required assignments without the active interaction of a classroom setting.
· You must have access to a reliable internet connection and a functioning Windows (or simulated) operating system.
· Purchase the required textbook that comes bundled with a current version of software. No other books or software versions are acceptable.
· You should anticipate spending 9 hours per week on the course (equivalent to 3 hours in class and 6-12 hours outside class). Of course, this varies depending on your abilities, knowledge, and study habits.
The text (and software) is specially priced and available through the MiraCosta Bookstore:
