Hi - my name is Rachelle Agatha, and I hold an active certified public accountant (CPA) license in California. I received my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business/Accounting from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. I obtained my MBA from California State University, Sacramento. My first job out of college was with one of the largest public accounting firms then known as Price Waterhouse which ultimately merged with Coopers & Lybrand and became PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Since earning my CPA license, I have worked as an executive financial leader in Municipal Government, a CEO of a CA State Trial Court, a Vice President of Finance in Healthcare, a CFO of a private graduate university, and I am currently the Vice President of Administration with San Diego Mesa College.

My real love is to teach accounting, business and computer courses for the community college system which I have done for 20 years.  While working full-time as a CFO, I also I teach for Palomar College, Miramar College, and MiraCosta College. I live with my husband and our daughters in Poway. I love technology! IMPORTANT NOTE on CLOSED Classes: All the online classes and many of the on-campus classes close quickly. You should register ASAP if you are interested in any class. If you change your mind, please drop the class immediately so others can enroll. If the class is closed, consider the Wait List procedures; be aware of the rules and the limitations. Otherwise, consider these options: 1) register for another section if available; 2) register for another class; 3) consider registering in a future semester; 4) show up for the first day of an on-campus class and discuss with the instructor; or 5) forget about it and move on. The instructor will not intervene with the wait list procedure.

Please be aware that, once a class reaches maximum enrollment and “closes,” on or after the first day of the semester, even if “available” spaces appear on SURF due to drops, it is within the instructor's complete discretion on whether to add more students at that time. Drops after the first day are normal attrition and are factored in when setting the maximum enrollment. The class has started and important assignments and subject matter have already been covered. Please do not email the instructor. Thank you for your understanding.

Teaching Philosophy/Style and Class Management/Activities

My teaching philosophy is based on my experience as an accounting professional and executive as well as from teaching accounting, business and computer science courses for the community college system across California both in class and on-line.  I remember learning accounting from instructors who had no idea what it took to actually be an accountant in the real world.  My goal has always been to make an accounting course fit the needs of all students. You will be challenged, but you will walk away with skills and a sense of accomplishment.  

What you will gain: Whether your goal is to be an accounting major and continue on to a four year university; to learn accounting for your current or future job; or to do your own books for personal or business reasons, I strive to ensure your learning experience in my course meets your expectations.  I also want you to either love accounting or at least not be afraid of it! As an on-line instructor, I offer many technologies and materials to enhance your learning experience.  I want to empower you in any way I can. You will come away from the course not only understanding the requirements of Practical Accounting, but also with a refined level of technical skills applicable for work or other college courses.

What I expect: The on-line course environment requires stronger self motivation and dedication.  The course is organized and very detailed; however, you will need to follow the calendar and ensure you do not miss deadlines.  As a student, you will be required to be courteous and respectful to your peers and the instructor.  In turn you will be treated the same and come away with not only accounting skills but enhanced technical skills.  You will need to keep up with emails I send and other contact from me and ask questions up front where necessary.  Your on-line learning experience will be enhanced by asking questions, submitting thoughtful and detailed assignments, and keeping up with deadlines.  Stay motivated, organized, and you will succeed!
