math graphicsLesson 11: Sections 6.4 and 6.5; Quiz 11

Deadline: Sunday, May 3, 2009

Remember to check announcements and your messages in MyMathLab each time you log on to MyMathLab.

a. Objectives

This lesson covers 6.4 and 6.5 in your textbook and Quiz 11. When you complete this lesson you should be able to solve each of the following types of problems, showing all relevant steps:
6.4.1. Change exponential expressions to logarithmic expressions and logarithmic expressions to exponential expressions.
6.4.2. Evaluate logarithmic expressions without a calculator.
6.4.3. Determine the domain of a logarithmic function.
6.4.4. Graph logarithmic functions of base a where a is greater than one. Sketch the graph with the proper shape and end-behaviors, and give the equation of the vertical asymptote. Label three points on the graph.
6.4.5. Graph logarithmic functions of base a where a is between zero and one. Sketch the graph with the proper shape and end-behaviors, and give the equation of the vertical asymptote. Label three points on the graph.
6.4.6 Solve logarithmic equations algebraically.
6.5.1. Use the properties of logarithms to simplify expressions.
6.5.2 Use the product, quotient and power rules to rewrite a logarithmic expression as a sum or difference of logarithms.
6.5.3. Use the product, quotient and power rules to rewrite a sum or difference of logarithms as a single logarithm.
6.5.4. Use the change-of-base formula and a calculator to evaluate logarithms that have bases other than 10 or e.

b. Assignments and Due Dates

All assignments for Lesson 11 must be completed and submitted by 11:59pm on Sunday, May 3, 2009. Assignments for this lesson include:

1. Learn the material in 6.4 by using "E-text, Videos, Practice" (study the text, view videos, do example problems and practice problems) AND/OR using the "Lecture Notes" (read the lecture notes, work out the examples, and check your answers using the key). Both are accessed through the MyMathLab (MML) menu on the left of this page.

2. Complete the homework assignment for 6.4. Homework assignments are accessed through "Homework" on MML menu on the left.

3. Learn the material in 6.5 by using"E-text, Videos, Practice" (study the text, view videos, do example problems and practice problems) AND/OR using the "Lecture Notes" (read the lecture notes, work out the examples, and check your answers using the key). Both are accessed through the MML menu on the left of this page.

4. Complete the homework assignment for 6.5. Homework assignments are accessed through "Homework" on the MML menu on the left.

5. Complete and submit Quiz 11. Quizzes are accessed through "Quizzes/Test Rev" on the MML menu on the left.
