Scores are listed by the last four digits of your student number. Please check all scores for accuracy. Please disregard the plusses (+) and minuses (-) as only the Letter Grade portion is submitted to the college.
Hope to see all of you either in an upcoming class or around campus. Happy Holidays!
I weighted the scores as indicated in the first block of grading. Please note some explanation.

1Average exam scores are usually between 75-80%. Your grade for the entire class is based on all scores, not just exam scores. The average grade for this course will be about a "B" or "B-" overall. To see where you stand in the class, and a good estimate of your overall course grade, see where you stand relative to the average exam score for each exam. If you had a 75% or higher score, and the class average was 75%, you will be in the "B" or "A" bracket. If your score was below 75%, you will likely be in the "C" bracket. Your lowest exam score will be dropped. The course grade percentages given in the syllabus are for the entire course, not just your exam scores. Everyone does better in the lab, so your overall percentage for the course will always be higher than your exam scores. If you are concerned about your exam performance, please come in and see me during my office hours. Students who come in during my office hours usually increase their scores about one letter grade, compared to the scores they would have received by working through the problems. As a general rule, exam scores greater than 85% means you will likely be in the "A" bracket and exam scores greater than 70% mean you will likely be in the "B" bracket, based on past semesters. Your course grade is based on your overall course percentage, which includes your lab grades, and which usually raises your overall course percentage.
If your Total Score at the end of the semester is within one percent (1%) of the cutoff (you have 89% and 90% is required for an "A" grade), I will use your Final Exam percentage to determine your grade. For example, if your Final Exam score is 90% or higher, you will get an "A" grade. If your Final Exam is below 90%, you will receive a "B" grade. (Similar comparisons will be made for "B" or "C" grades, near 80% or 70%, respectively.) |
Please be aware that all papers have not been recorded. Stay posted for additional updates.
Grades are listed according to last four digits of your student number. I believe all scores are accurately recorded. If there is an error, please let me know immediately (email or in person).
The raw score for the Final Exam is shown in column F1. Not knowing what should be the average for the multiple choice exam, I adjusted the highest raw score (80 points out of 100 total) to 100 points (multiplying by 1.25). Every score was adjusted by this same multiple, yielding a class average score of about 78% (compared to the raw average of 61.7%). This adjusted average is close to the average for the other exams taken during the semester, which is likely to have been the average, if an exam using the regular format had been given. I feel comfortable with this adjustment, and believe that the overall ranking of the class is consistent, based on this adjustment. Therefore, to see your Final Exam score, which is counted, look in the Final Adjust column. The Final Exam score used in determining the course grade has been adjusted to 200 points, and is shown in the Final Subtotal column.
The Letter Grades shown here will likely be the grades turned in on Friday. Disregard the plusses (+) and minuses (-), as they will not be included in the final course grade that is turned in.
Thank you for taking in this organic chemistry class. I have enjoyed interacting with each of you. I look forward to seeing most of you next semester. Happy Holidays!
To gage your final grade for the course, examine the following. Grade cutoffs are:
A: 900 points; B: 800 points; C: 700 points; D: 600 pointsLook at your Total Score. Since the Final Exam is worth 200 points, add these 200 points to your Total Score to see the maximum grade you could receive. For example, if you have 649 points, the maximum points possible would be 849 points, putting you into the "B" bracket. Also, to see the score you would need to just barely make the "B" bracket, subtract your Total Score (649 points) from the "B" bracket cutoff (800 points). You would need 151 points on the final exam, which would be a 75.5% score.
Read here to see how to estimate your Final Grade for the class. Please disregard the Letter Grade information, as it is not accurate.
