Part II Step 5: Get into MyMathLab (though Blackboard) and Do the Following within Your MyMathLab (MML) Materials

You are now ready for Part II of your orientation.

It is time to get into the online class materials.
Please follow the directions below to enroll in the MyMathLab materials though Blackboard now.

(If you learn better by watching, here a link that shows, generally, how to do steps 1-3 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--heDdwarh4. It is very general and not tailored to our specific class. However, watching the video before you try to complete steps 1-3 below may be useful.)

You must be actually enrolled in the class in order to have access to the class' Blackboard page. The updates to access Blackboard are done between 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM., Mondays - Saturdays. Thus, if you add and pay for a class after 7:00 PM, please wait for the next morning to access Blackboard. Note: no updates are done on Sundays.

  1. Go to MiraCosta's Blackboard page: https://blackboard.miracosta.edu/webapps/login/

  • Click on the blue rectangle labeled "Log in to Blackboard".
  • Use your SURF username and password to log in.
If you do not remember your SURF/Blackboard username or password, you will need to contact the MiraCosta Student Help Desk : http://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/studenthelp/index.html .
I do not have your username and password. The Help Desk web page gives instructions on how to get or reset your password, how to know what your SURF ID is, etc. So, spending some time readying that web page may solve your inability to log in to Blackboard. The Help Desk web page also gives the contact information for the live support (either by phone or via email) as well as the hours for the live support.

  • Find and click on the link in Blackboard for this class. It will look like either "SP17 Math 115 2557" or "SP17 Math 126 2549" (depending on which online class of mine you are taking).

  • See what is avaulable in the Blackboard Class Materials. Notice that some of the graded items in the class are located here in Blackboard. Other graded items are located in MyMathLab.

NOTE : If there is no Blackboard link for this class yet, please try again another day. The Blackboard link WILL be active on or before the first day of class. Ideally, I try to have everything ready a week or two before the first day of class so students can get in and get comfortable. So, please check a week or two before the semester begins so you do not have to learn how to navigate the class materials while you are trying to learn the content.

  1. Be ready to pay for the access to MyMathLab

You will need ONE of the following to register in MyMathLab:
  • An Access Code - If you purchase your class materials from the MiraCosta College Bookstore, you already have an access code (or will receive it if you had the required materials shipped to your home). Please do not purchase a pre-owned/used access code. Once an access code has been redeemed, it can NOT be used again.
  • A Credit Card
  • A Pay Pal Account
  • (If you are retaking this class and used MyMathLab with this exact eBook within the last calendar year, you may not have to pay for access to MML again. If you are in this situation, the instructions below should allow you to get into MMY .)

**Note: If you are NOT able to purchase the required class materials right now, please feel free to use the 'Temporary 14-day Access' offered by the publisher. You will need to purchase access to remain in the class once the 14-day temporary access has expired.**

  • Click on the blue rectangle labeled 'Go to Your Course'.
  • The MyMathLab materials should open in a new tab. You are now ready to complete the rest of the orientation.

It is recommended that you enter your MyMathLab class materials via Blackboard each time. However, in the event Blackboard has a outage, you can access the MML class materials by going to the following URL : http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com/northamerica/?cc

In the even that MyMathLab has an outage, you can still access homework, quizzes and several other by going to the following: https://www.mathxl.com/login_mml.htm.

All work will be saved when you return to the normal MyMathLab materials. Please bookmark the above links now in case you need them at any time during the semester.

  1. Access the MyMathLab online class materials & become familiar with the locations of key items in the class

When you finished step 3 above and clicked on 'Go to Your Course', the MyMathLab materials should open in a new window.

(Each time you log into Blackboard and click on the links "MyMathLab - All Work Done here" then "MyMathLab with Pearson eText Course Home", the MyMathLab online class materials will open in a new window).

Please do the following in MML to complete your orienation:

  • Click on EACH LINK in the MyMathLab class menu (on the left)

Begin by expanding the MyMathLab menu link titled *Class Main*. This is done by clicking on the gray arrow next to the words, *Class Main*.

You need to be intimately familiar with where everything in the class is located. Where is the Practice Homework (also called the 'Study Plan')? The graded Homework? Where are the Practice Quizzes? The graded Quizzes? Where are the paper Test Reviews? Where are the required Discussion Boards? The optional Discussion Boards? Where is the eBook, the Lecture Videos, the eBook Solution Manual, the class announcements?, etc.? Are Homework assignments due at the end of each week, or does each Homework have a different due date?

It may take an hour or two just to poke around and find out where everything is. Now is the time to locate everything. Once we're submitting homework on an almost daily basis, you probably won't have the time to leisurely look around.

Once you have poked around enough and are familiar with where everything is in MyMathLas as well as in Blackbaord (i.e. you've at least located the Orientation link/folder, at least one link for each of the following : Homework, Quiz, Discussion Board, eBook, Practice (Study Plan) Homework, paper Test Reviews, and Lecture Videos) then open up the folder/link labeled 'Orientation'.

  1. Complete work in MyMathLab

  • Do ALL of the activities listed in the 'Orientation by 1/24' link

After you satisfactorily complete all of the orientation activities (generally, it will be items A-E) in the orientation link, you are done with your online orientation and are ready to begin working on class material. Your last orientation item is completing a Syllabus Quiz. Once you do that with a minimum score of 80%, your entire first set of homework assignments will open and you can begin working in the class.

You will know when your orientation is complete because the entire semester's worth of homework (non-orientation homework) will open up and you can start working on those homeworks. If you see a flag on any homework assignment, you aren't done with your orientation.

Please feel free to begin working right away. Note: you do have several graded (non-orientation) homework assignments covering pre-requisite material due within the 1st few days of class.

You do not have to wait until the semester begins to complete homework assignments and other assessments which don't require you to be on-campus.
You may begin taking your on-site assessments the first day of the semester (see Syllabus).

There is no limit to how quickly you can move through this class (see Syllabus). Just don't go slower than the deadlines!

Welcome to the class. I look forward to a wonderful semester with you!

  • Open up the first week of content (the class is organized by weeks) and get started working in the actual class material.

Once you're done with the orientation, it's time to start doing the math for this class.

Please open up the first week of content and start working on the first homework assignment. This first homework assignment covers material from the prerequisite class(es).
