My Class-Specific Materials

Here you'll find things like my syllabi, course schedules, rubrics, particular assignments, etc. I'm happy to share; just please give credit to the author(s) where appropriate.

I use a learning management system (LMS; also sometimes referred to as a course management system, CMS) extensively in all my courses, regardless of modality. These materials are distributed to students almost exclusively via the LMS. This not only saves time and a lot of paper, but it forces the students to check the LMS frequently or risk suffering the consequences.

• For example, I do not print and distribute syllabi. <gasp!>  Rather, I have the LMS site for the course set up about a week in advance of the first day of class. Then I email enrolled students with information about how to access the course and what they need for the first meeting. I typically do this twice: once when the course LMS site first goes live and a second time a day or two before the first class meeting.
• Thus, on the first day of class many students show up with their own printed copies of the syllabus and often other materials such as the ABCD card, student questionnaire, and syllabus scavenger hunt.
• When it comes time to refer to the syllabus on that first day, I do need everyone to have access to it. So I allow – on that first day of class ONLY (because I have a no electronics policy) – electronic devices to be used to access the syllabus. That shows the students that being able to access the LMS is a critically important part of the course so they'd better get used to it: here's how to do it and where to find things. So they can use their phones, tablets, and/or computers in class on that first day but after that, the use of electronic devices during class is explicitly prohibited.
• I actually do bring a few printed copies just in case (max 10 per 40 students registered) but I distribute them sparingly. I need them to get used to working together in groups since they'll have to do that all term, e.g. when working Lecture Tutorials or other collaborative learning exercises.

Many materials (such as rubrics, some observing exercises, and most of the "Other" resources) are the same for multiple courses.
